Why do I need to type characters from a graphic to submit this form?

Typing the text from a graphic helps ensure that a person is completing the form - not an automated program. We have implemented this step in order to protect the web server from automated submissions and the web site owner from spam. In most cases, an automated program cannot recognize the characters in the picture.
